WHAT WE DO

Community councils are voluntary groups of people who give their time to, and have a genuine interest in their community. They usually meet once a month, and their main role is to represent their local community. 

They should consult the local community and put forward their views to the local authority and other organisations including the Scottish Parliament, NHS Lothian and the police.

Community councils were introduced through the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973
The Local Government Scotland Act, 1973 empowered all local authorities to assist community councils, both with funding and administrative support
Community councils have a statutory right to be consulted on local planning issues
The first community councils in Edinburgh were established in 1980
